Pakistan and Times Sq. - So, basically, Mr. Kristof is arguing that if you want to fix Pakistan’s terror network (and its exports), you have to fix its failing education system. Now, I like fixing education as much as the next aspring doctoral student. But, sorry dude, I think your counterterrorism strategy is flawed. A lot of the comments highlight this but the simple fact that many suspected terrorists come from middle- and upper-middle class backgrounds says a lot — which likely says that people attempt to orchestrate attacks for some other reason than the fact that they’re angry with their country’s infrastructure. Those that try to orchestrate attacks is largely fluid (among your active cadres, active supports, passive supporters, and everyone else) but an effective counterterrorism strategy needs to take care of the leadership of terrorist networks before it starts ground up improvements. And, even then, you’re likely to piss off someone else for your interventionist foreign policy.
Thank goodness for realism and realpolitik.
